Baker & Spice

Beautiful, Peaceful #cafe in the heart of #Beijing!

Had to visit the US Embassy (a mess – the guards don’t speak English and sent me through the mile long Chinese line getting VISAs.  The head guy found out and came to get me 😜 Soaking Wet!💦Gave them my appoinment sheet and it crumbled😂  Anyway, now just waiting before I brave the 1hr subway to the #train.

Stopped at Baker & Spice here at Liangmaqiao station.  The #food is delicious!  So many choices and #bread loaves!  Got my mom a Walnut Bread and me a#Chocolate #cupcake.  The cupcake top inside was a surprise – completely filled with chocolate mousse!!!  So delicious!!! 🍴

Go to Liangmaqiao Station, Exit B.It’s right there.

Happy Dragon Boat Festival!

Happy Dragon Boat Festival!  Today in #China we are celebrating the Duanwu #端午 festival!  It’s been a Holiday here for more than 2000 years!

It celebrates the Famous #poet #quyuan. Devoted to #China 🇨🇳, he wrote beautiful poems about its history, nature, and people. When the invading Qin armies approached, he chose to drown himself rather than see his beloved country fall.  Although they sent out many #dragon boats to look for him, they could not save him in time.
So to commemorate his memory, every year they eat  #粽子 (aka Zongzi), a sticky #rice #treat wrapped in banana leaves. And the big cities send out Dragon #boats for big battles and races on the lakes and rivers! Cool!

#Stewed Iron Eggs

Stewed Iron Eggs – everypne’s favorite food! It even comes #SPICED! As my ESL students say – ‘have a try!’

Notice the star #anise on the picture (tastes like licorice – often poisonous here in #China since the legit anise stars go to theraflu factories).  Can only imagine that added to stewed egg flavor!

Ho Lai Ho

Ho Lai Lo – one of our resident, delicious bakeries!  Yummy!

Korean BBQ sauce!

😂 Travel #Miscommunication – I asked a local importer if he could help me find #BBQ sauce, knowing that #HuntsBBQ is in a lot of places here.  He said ‘Sure!’  A couple days later, they told me my sauce was in and I came to find this – #KoreanBBQ sauce 😜 Also delicious! Just not what I was thinking.  One of the fun parts of travel – We have different views of food vocabulary 😄

Sweetie Pie, Honey Bread!

#Honeybread – A popular dessert here is Honey Bread – a really sweet bread with ice cream on top.  Slowly the ice cream melted down into the bread.  Very fun!

#Summer Treats! Lemon Qi. . .

Lemon 7-up is absolutely delicious! They call it ningmengqi or 柠檬七.

柠檬 (lemon) + 七 (7). It’s basically 7-up with squeezed lemon in it.  Delicious!

I usually order it 多多冰 (duo duo bing).  多means more/extra.  In Chinese, saying something twice makes it stronger – so 多多 means ‘a lot extra’.  冰 means ‘ice’.

So I get 柠檬七多多冰 (ningmenqi duoduobing) or lemon 7-up with lots of ice. It’s possible I’m supposed to say the Ice first- my grammar isn’t that good. 😂 But they understand me! It cost me 7¥ or about 1$.

If you visit #China. you should try it. Very Good and super refreshing!

Ice Cream Coffee

Iced Coffee #China style!  Here in Henan, most restaurants don’t have ice.  The Chinese don’t really like iced drinks – believing the cold unboiled water will make them sick and is a bad combination with your inside organs. (Probably true of the water here.)

But Ice Cream is a different story.  Still bad for your health but not so likely to kill you.  So if you Order iced coffee or an iced soda You’ll get Ice cream coffee or a ice cream float 😄

#Foodie Favorite

Ooh. . . . Seaweed Chips!  😂 The perfect junk food.  They have the weirdest Types of chips here – no BBQ or Chedder Sour Cream.  Nope, It’s Seaweed, Green Tea, Squid, Roasted Lamb, Hot Pot, and Yoghurt
